Grävlingsorientering (possibly misspelled) - what is it? Came across it in a film but don't remember the full sentence sadly.

  • "Grävling" is an animal. "Orientering" is an activity and also a sport that's not uncommon in Sweden. Sounds like it could be some sort of joke within some types of contexts. Without context it's probably hard to guess what it's supposed to be or mean.

Could you at least give us the name of the movie?

In English the animal is a badger, and the sport is orienteering.

But I believe "orientering" could also mean an introductory talk, advice or instruction. So it could be an introduction to the anatomy of badgers, or other badger-related stuff - perhaps also some sort of joke.

I don't think we'd use the word that way. In Swedish "Grävlingsorientering" to me sounds like instruction or advice given to the badgers, rather than to humans about badgers. It's a bit odd because I would certainly see "orientering" in that sense, and you could certainly construct other words in a similar fashion, for example "musikerutbilding", where you have your category first followed by the activity. But there again it is an education for musicians.

    Grävlingsorientering
    Musiker
    utbildning
    Chaufförsträning

I think the above are all similar. The latter 'apply directly' to the former.

I just can't help seeing a bunch of badgers huddling around a leader who's giving them an introduction on something...

Fair enough - so not a talk ABOUT badgers.

Though your example of badgers gathering for a talk doesn't sound any more surreal than badgers going orienteering, or badgers being involved in a human orienteering 🙂

:D interesting discussion here. The movie is called Studentfesten (2013) and as far as I recall it featured no actual badgers :). That's why I didn't manage to translate by context.

Badgers have bad eyesight and would perform poorly orienteering. He might be mocking someone's ability to perform a task
