Swedish: Jag läser inte ofta men när jag väl läser så är det Stephen King.

Can anyone explain the sentiment or usage of 'väl' and 'så' here ?

The sentiment of väl to me seems like '...but when I do read...' but i have no idea about the så. I understand the sentence as a whole i just don't get what role these two words play.

Thanks.

You are right about väl. It is one of those small words that are near impossible to translate. It is historically the same as English well. In this context, it means something close to 'finally' or 'actually'.

is more easily translated as then: But when I do read, then it's Stephen King.
