# Swedish: Lästal

Hi all,

I am a Swedish beginner and have come across the word lästal in a children's book that I am reading. I cannot figure out what it means apart from that it is something to do with Maths, and that is confirmed by a Google search. But the word does not appear in the Word Reference dictionary or my own dictionary. In context, it says "Du är mycket bättre på att lösa lästal än jag."

Hejsan! Ett lästal is a maths problem presented in text, so you have to work out yourself what calculations to make.
I found this example online:

"I Saras familj äter man spagetti en gång i veckan. Det går åt ett paket åt gången. Varje paket innehåller 1 500 spagettistrån och varje strå är 26 centimeter långt. Hur många kilometer spagetti äter de på ett år?"

(Ett paket innehåller 1 500 · 26 = 39 000 cm spagetti.
På ett år äter de 52 · 39 000 = 2 028 000 cm spagetti.
2 028 000 cm = 20 280 m = 20,28 km.
Svar: Saras familj äter 20,28 km spagetti per år.)

Oh fantastic. I just could not figure it out! I think we just say Maths problems in English. I cannot think of a particular word.

In American English those are called "word problems" or "story problems"
