tackle vs deal with

Would you use tackle in a formal paper about writers?
So-and-so tackled the themes of such-and-such.
Or, is dealt with a better choice given the high register of such a paper?

As a general statement, go with dealt with for formality -- or addressed or explored or almost anything but tackled. :)
