tagliare le gambe

Hello everybody,

could you help me out with this sentence:"il loro secondo goal ci ha proprio tagliato le gambe"?

My attempt: "Their second goal didn't leave us the least hope to overturn the result", but I guess there's a better way to translate it.

Thanks

Mmmm .....their second goal really took the wind out of our sails. (Sailing metaphor:))

I'm not sure this is quite as strong as "tagliare le gambe" though.

Thanks Murphy. Just wondering...is it commonly used talking about a football game?

The italian expression is quite spread. I'm looking for something used on a widespread basis...as I wouldn't want people to get me wrong.

It's a very widely-used expression, suitable for lots of different contexts. And British football commentators just love using metaphors and clichés;):)
