I think "for example" is more common. I would use a "-" instead of the comma.

I also use sentences constructed like this:

"Many buildings in our city are in disrepair. Take, for example, our school, which is falling apart at the seams!"

I'm not totally positive about my grammar on that one, so please feel free to correct me.

Your use is fine but, "In many schools, take our school for example, one can get from one building on campus to another within 10 minutes if you hurry." sounds a little more natural to me.

In the sample sentences provided, "take ... as an example" would have the same literal meaning as "take ... for example" but would tend to slow down the sentence and become a point of emphasis.
