take someone for a ride

hello, everyone. I'm just here trying to know how common this idiom in both (British and American English ), and it's just mean to deceive someone or slightly different in the meaning ? Like saying . . .

¤ I'd just begun to realize he was taking me for a ride.
¤ Be careful or he'll take you for a ride.
or
¤ I found out I'd been taken for a ride by someone I really trusted.
