tant que

Context: I am in a gite with an electric window in the roof. There are instructions for use but I dare not use it until I am sure what the instructions mean!

The use of tant que and two negatives is confusing me...

Ne pas ouvrir la fenêtre tant que le violet n'est pas ouvert.

The blind and window are both operated by the same box and at the moment the blind is covering the window.

Merci.

You have to open the "volet" FIRST :)

The sentence is : "Do not open the window as long as the blind is not open"

But I agree that "Do not open the window as long as the blind is shut" would be more correct.
