"Had done", or "nerver did": Which one should be used in the context?

1- "That was a fun flight. I never did that before. It was my first flight."

"Had done" and "never did" are opposites. How can they be used in the same sentence, to mean the same thing?

If you want us to compare two sentences, write both sentences in your post. Don't write one and have us guess what the other is.

"I had never done that before" is a much better way to say it than "I never did that before". But both would be easily understood.
