Thanks for your birthday wishes.

My friend left me a voice message, in which he said happy birthday and asked me a question. I called back and got his answering machine. I wanted to thank him for saying happy birthday to me. How do I say it idiomatically? Are the following sentences OK? Thanks.

"Hi, XX. Thanks for the birthday wishes." (But he didn't wish me anything. He just said happy birthday.)
"Hi, XX. Thanks for the message." (I want to be specific to thank him for saying happy birthday, not the entire message.)
