That guy was an ace. Besides he sure had a lots of guts (nerve) when he defended us against management. How he raised a fuss?

    You could use "ace" in this way. The meaning of ace as the "best" originates in card playing in the 18th century, where the ace is the highest value card (as opposed to dice where it is the lowest value). The most popular extended use as a "flying ace" developed during World War I. A flying Ace was a pilot who downed 5 or 10 enemy aircraft.
