Hello to all,

Thanks for reading my post.


Sample sentence:

"Have you finished the work already?" would be a question I would ask in surprise after discovering someone had completed something that I <had> thought would take them longer.

Question:

Is the sentence correct both with and without the bolded "had"? Which version is preferable?

    Why “would be a question I would ask”? It’s simpler and better to just say it “is a question I would ask”.
