Say A and b know the boy whose name is C.

In this situation, which should I use and why?

A: Do You remember C? he's dead.
B:What? that/the boy is dead? I can't believe it!.

If you know someone you would use their name there, not "that boy" which sounds horribly dismissive and callous. I could only imagine someone using that about someone they did not know very well at all, or whom they actively hate.
