I have read this expression sometimes "That scared the shit out of him". I guess it must be vulgar or very colloquial expression.

Yes, it is vulgar, although quite mild in comparison with today's language!
Simply means that it really scared him, I guess it refers to when people are really scared, they lose control of their bowels!!!!
