(The) above result

In a formal paper, would it be correct to refer to a result mentioned immediatly above by saying:

"The goal now is to extend (the) above result to..."

Is any of the two forms correct? Either by including "the" or without it? I'd say that, without it, it's not correct, but what about including it, does it sound natural? Bear in mind this is a formal paper.

If none of those two ways are correct, could you provide me with a proper one?

    It looks fine to me. You do need "the".
