The weather is hot and humid today, so many of the animals aren't very animated/lively/chipper/active.

Which of the words in bold works in the above sentence? Thanks.

"lively" and "active" would be my personal choice for best fit.

I would also prefer to use "therefore" instead of "so".

Chipper and animated don't really have the correct meaning for what you are trying to say - they are really better suited towards describing a mood. An example would be :

"He spoke in an animated manner" or "His demeanor was bright and chipper"
