I don't understan de meaning of this sentence in the following context: Having babies, she said, was the real creativity: compared to this, the writing of plays and the making of films must seem thin indeed. 'But the best a man could do.' It seem to me a bit contradictory. Can anybody help me?

But [it is] the best [that] a man could do. El escribir no es gran cosa, pero es lo mejor que puede hacer un mero hombre.
