No, neither supprimer un livre nor supprimer une publication is OK.

If you ban a book, you cannot really eliminate, "delete" it, it stills exist. The only situation I can imagine is when an editor "supprime un livre de sa collection".

"Le livre était interdit en Roumanie pendant le communisme" works perfectly.
When you say "le livre était / a été censuré" means rather than parts of the book had to be erased or rewritten to please the censors.
