I wonder whether it can be understood in the two following ways:

1) Gladys was the Canon's only daughter and she was unmarried.
2) The Canon's had several daughters. Gladys was the only one unmarried.

    I would understand it as (2). For (1), I would expect Gladys Heywood was the Canon’s only daughter, who was unmarried.
