The derivation population of patients

In the context below, what does the bold part mean?

Artificial Intelligence recommendations are only as good as the data fed into algorithm development. Good machine learning programs require a very large number of detailed real cases, with accurate human judgments regarding outcomes. The accuracy of machine learning predictive algorithms depends more on the amount of data used to train the algorithm rather than on the type of machine learning program. Moreover, an AI algorithm may not generalize to situations that were not included in the data set used to derive it. The derivation population of patients may differ in important ways from the patient population to whom the algorithm is applied in practice because of differences in patients’ severity of illness, comorbid conditions, age, and social determinants of health.
