the difference between social support and public assistance

Hello.
Is there any difference between those two expressions? They both appear in a text that I'm translating and they seem to be different but I don't know how.
"Single fathers received more social support than single mothers, parented fewer residential children, and were more likely to be White and older and less likely to receive public assistance".
