Hello members,
Here is a quiz from my grammar drill.
The discovery that coal could be burned (  ) the kind of industrial society in which we live.
(1) enable (2) made possible (3) caused (4) came into being
The answer is (2), which I can understand. But is (3) also possible? If not, why?

    Hello, Akasaka. The discovery that coal could be burned was essential for the development of industrial society, but it didn't cause industrial society all by itself. Many other things were also necessary.
