The <essence> is ...

I have a new friend, who is a new immigrant. He is not a native English speaker. He is enrolled in the Settlement and Integration Program for new immigrants. This is what he said to me about the program.

(ex) He said, "I like the idea of showing immigrants how things operate here. The essence is to help new immigrants who don’t have any local work experience."

Does the word "essence" work in the sentence? Thank you very much for all your help.

The essence of what? It’s not really the right word in this context. It would be more idiomatic to say, for example, The idea is… or The purpose is…
