I fretted at the precious seconds that were lost in openong the first of them - the car was following us. But it was the gates that saved us. But it takes longer to open a gate from a car than from a bicycle, and what we gained in this way made up for the extra speed of the car in the stretches between.

Passammo da un bosco rado all'aperta campagna, il mio cuore si arrestò poichè c'erano cancelli lungo il sentiero. Mi agitai per i preziosi secondi persi nell'aprire il primo di questi - la macchina ci stava seguendo. Ma furono i cancelli che ci salvarono. Si impiega più tempo ad aprire un cancello da una macchina che da una bicicletta e quello che guadagnamo in questo modo compensa la maggiore velocità dell'automobile nei tratti tra uno e l'altro.
