"The faces on stage"

"It was the day their former bandmate had passed; all the faces on stage were serious."

Is the metonymic use of faces fine here? Would you use serious, or would a synonym be better suited (I don't want to say sad)?

    I think the metonym sounds really good. Everyone will understand "faces" to represent "band members" here.

    "Serious" works well for your adjective. You might also consider "grim", or "somber".
