Coming into a landing zone—a clearing in a rain forest—was one of the scariest parts. Our helicopters were completely vulnerable as they settled down. I think even the gunships, which stayed higher, were vulnerable.

  • Our helicopters were completely vulnerable as they settled down.
This may refer to the vertical descent of the helicopter as it comes in for a landing. Though settle down does not seem to be a technical term, there is what is called settling with power.
Settling with power is a state in which the helicopter settles into its own downwash.
    From Merriam-Webster, downwash

    Definition of downwash

: an airstream directed downward (as by an airfoil)

descendían seems like a good, safe translation
