Hello.

I was watching Kurt Seyit ve Sura with English subtitle
and came across the sentence I don't understand.

Women are gathered and pray together.
One women said "Please accept... the Koran and Mawlidi Sherif we read, my God."
I don't think the English translation is good. But could anybody explain what the sentence measn?

If you want to watch the scene, it's episode 3, 26:57.

Thank you.

  • No, it doesn't make English sense.

    But I've learnt this:

"Mawlid an-Nabi ash-Sharif or Eid Milad un Nabi – often known just as Mawlid – is the celebration of the prophet Muhammad’s birthday."

Hope this is an initial help! :)

Okumuş olduğumuz bu Kur'an-ı Kerimi, Mevlid-i Şerifi kabul eyle, ya Rabbi. (=Dear God, please accept the prayers that we have offered)

Did someone pass away in the series? If so, this might be the reason why those women are gathering and reciting "Qur'an and Mawlid-i Sharif".

They were sitting around one baby and prayed, so I assume It has something to do with the baby.

But what does Mevlid-i Şerifi mean? From the context it must be the title of some sacred book.
Mevlid-i Şerif is a literary genre in Islamic literature. It refers to the recitation of these literary works in the ceremonies held on the occasion of the prophet Muhammad's birthday. However, Mevlid can be recited on other occasions such as ceremonies held on the 40th day of a dead person, circumcision ceremonies, farewell ceremonies for those who are to leave for military service.

But what does Mevlid-i Şerifi mean? From the context it must be the title of some sacred book.
As mentioned above, Mewlid is the name given to all masnavi-style texts describing the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, short passages from his life and is a literary genre in Islamic literature in general.
But in this spesific instance, Mevlid(i-Şerif) is a collection of Turkish poems written and completed in 1409AC by Ottoman Turkish Suleyman Çelebi (Chelebi) and named " Vesilet-un-Necat" (Occasion of Salvation) . It is recited on all important events in -having religious sensitivity- one's life (including birth of a baby in this instance).
