    The spelling is "ordnance", not "ordinance".
    Look at ordnance and ordinance.

    Collectively, "ordnance" means "munitions" - anything that is military and likely to go "bang".

    "Unexploded ordnance" is stuff that could go bang, but has not done so yet.
