Is it correct to see "mugger" in the above as "robber?" Thanks.

    Yes, mugger is used for a robber who robs in the street.

    Maybe it has something to do with repeating the words that they are trying to avoid. i.e. "The woman used an umbrella to fend off the mugger that was trying to mug her"

    "The woman used an umbrella to fend off the robber that was trying to rob her"

    Sounds better using this

    "The woman used an umbrella to fend off the robber that was trying to mug her"
    or
    "The woman used an umbrella to fend off the mugger that was trying to rob her".
