the number of (the) / A large number of (the)

Hi,

1- I couldn't count the number of (the) students in my class.

2- A large number of (the) students in my class didn't attend lesson.

3- A substantial part of (the) students in my class didn't attend lesson.

I am torn between of the choices of whether I must put 'the' in the sentences above or not. In my humble opinion, sentences 2 and 3 could be OK with 'the'. I am really not sure of it. :(
