    There are probably several options which could be chosen for each alternative you seek.
    You are laying yourself open to a flood of counter-arguments for every item which you listed. I would suggest that you propose an alternative for each and we will knock them down as you put them up.

    Hint: Use a thesaurus.

    I filled in Suzi's blanks with some suggestions of my own - except for #7. I'm not familiar with "stiff breeze."

    No, I didn't work them out myself. They come from an unidentified xerox, but probably they had been selected from various sources by someone.

    A stiff breeze is just a strong wind or better storm.
    What climate are you living in? Where I live…
    A stiff breeze can be judged by it being a little uncomfortable to walk into!
    A strong wind takes the washing off the line with one of it's lesser gusts,
    A storm takes the slates of the roof!

    Couldn't you say that a stiff breeze took your washing off the line the other day? Of course, sometimes a gentle wind can already be considered a stiff breeze, depends on what you are feeling like.

    However, I must admit that "storm" was a bit exaggerated. :eek:

    Whodunit,
    The term "gentle wind" does indeed exist. It is in one of my favorite poems by Wm. Blake, "Love's Secret":

    Never seek to tell thy love,
    Love that never told can be;
    For the gentle wind does move
    Silently, invisibly.
