What is the English word for "the room in which company is entertained"? Is it "parlor" or "drawing room"? I get the feeling "parlor" is more common in American English while "drawing room" is more common in British English.
Speaking only for the UK, drawing room is very grand, parlour is very old-fashioned. In most people’s homes the main downstairs rooms (apart from the kitchen) are called the dining room and the sitting room or lounge.
