Can "hand" mean "trick?" <-----Edited to add question to post.----->

I read this from the book, Maltese Falcon
Gutman finally got the falcon but it's a fake, so here comes the conversation:
CAIRO: You bungled it, Gutman. You and your stupid attempt to buy it. The Russian caught on how valuable it was. No wonder we had so little trouble stealing it. you imbecile.
GUTMAN: Yes. This is the Russian's "hand", there's no doubt of it....

    It is short for "the Russian's handwriting:" something that identifies him. The way someone made fools of Cairo and Gutman suggests that it was Kemidov, "the Russian."
