He can recognize no expression. The mouth might as well not be there. The fine aquiline nose appears to be more forceful and the saucer-like shape of the eyes hold within either sky a vacant moon.

Should it by any chance be 'holds'?

    I guess each eye is shaped like a saucer and the eyes hold ... the shape wouldn't hold. There is also have "hold within either sky" which suggests to me there are two skies, one in each eye, as well as a vacant moon in each.
