The season is winter

Hi everyone,
This is the sentence I want to use with my students. Each day I post the date, weather and season. My question is, do I need the definite article in this sentence?
Is it:
La estación es invierno.
OR
La estación es el invierno.

You can use just "invierno" as that sort of hybrid "circunstantial complement of time" rather than predicative that would result from "el invierno".
Exactly the same as in English.
