(the) ship Titanic

Hello,

1. When I have the name of an object after it, can (or should) I omit the “the”?

E.g. I saw (the) ship Titanic when I was a child.

2. When I refer to the volumes A and B in a book (say, Sophie's World), can (or should) I omit the “the”?

E.g. I have finished reading (the) volume A in Sophie's World.

If both “the” above can be omitted, are the reasons behind the same?
