Full phrase: The student must have taken three units of a course related to his present major.

I am not accustomed to the US school stuffs so I don't really have 'three units of a course' down pat. I know what the word 'a course' means but what can be 'three units' of them.

Thank you in advance :)

A unit will be one term, which is usually a course held over one school year. So if your major is Spanish, you must have taken three units or years of Spanish, presumably as a prerequisite for something that is not named here, such as graduation, or entry into a higher level of study.
