"The forest crumbled before the wind and the thunder rolled and the lightning fell and the rock rocked to its foundation." This is one of the sentences from Edgar Allan Poe's short story called "Silence".In this story the demon stands in the morass and looks at the man who is sitting on the rock. This man is tired and un happy. He wants to be alone. The demon observes his actions from his shelter.Soon The demon curses the elements and then heavy rain starts.Do you know what crossed out words mean?

"Rolling thunder" is a common metaphor in English.

Since thunder is produced by electrical discharge in a storm and the discharge can proceed from cloud to cloud, it seems, more or less, to be "rolling" like waves or bowling balls when heard from a distance.
