the title Mr for an incumbent leader

One local journalist used the title Mr when referring to our president. Is it all right to refer to President Obama as Mr Obama, say, when writing a news article?

There's nothing inherently disrespectful about calling a gentleman "Mr." In fact, there are U.S. publications (notably The New York Times) that do the same thing. The Times refers to him as "President Obama" on first reference, and "Mr. Obama" on subsequent references.

As an added note, the vast majority of newspapers (The NY Times and Wall Street Journal being notable exceptions) use just "Obama" or "the president," on second and subsequent references.

As pointed out elsewhere in this forum, the Times and WSJ, as a matter of style, use "Mr." on second reference regardless of how disgusting and murderous the person might be.
