The traffic lights were against me.

Hello everyone,

I'd like to hear a native speaker's opinion on the use of this construction in the following situation:

A friend has to drive across the town to get over to my place. When he finally arrives, a bit later than I expected, I say:

- What took you so long?
- All the traffic lights were against me. I had to stop and wait at each intersection.

This construction is listed in one of my dictionaries but I don't know whether it sounds idiomatic or not. Or would it be better to say it in simpler words, like "All the traffic lights on my way were red"?

Thanks in advance.
