Does anyone here read poetry?

I read a poam the other day called "The Universal Soilder" it was written by St. Marie. It was a very touching poem and i think people should read it...but i didnt understand what the Universal soilder was? Is he a soilder that fights for the whole world, or what?

War poems can be very confusing! WHy we have to study it i don't know?

    The meaning of the poem is that we all bear joint responsibilty for war because if we all refused to fight there would be no more wars.

    The Universal Soldier is actually a song by Buffy Saint Marie. This is what she says about it herself, hope it helps. It might be good for you if you can hear a recording of it.

    "I wrote "Universal Soldier" in the basement of The Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early sixties. It's about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all. Donovan had a hit with it in 1965."
