The use of "alternatively"

Senior Member
Can I use "alternatively" to describe two possible outcomes of a person may face?

For example:
He will be released if there is not enough evidence. Alternatively, he will be detained until taken to the court.

It is best replaced by "if not". I know it. But I wonder if there is any single word that can replace it. So I wonder can I use "alternatively" in this way.
