The town is a long way from the nearest big city. However, there is a good bus service.
Longman dictionary

The speaker implied: there is a good bus service (in the nearest big city), am I right?
Thanks.

I would understand it that there is a good bus service between the town and the nearest big city.

I disagree somewhat with Egmont (post #4).

"Service" is often uncountable, but it can also be countable in the sense of a company, e.g.: XYZ Transportation is a bus service.
The town is a long way from the nearest big city. However, there is a good bus service.
I don't think the "a" is in error here, since it may refer to a dependable company that operates local buses.
