Once a year a race is held for old cars. A lot of cars entered for this race last year and there was a great deal of excitement just before it began.

(Lesson 56 Faster than sound! New Concept English 2, Longman)

I wonder if ‘there was a great deal of excitement’ means ‘everyone was excited very much’.

Many thanks in advance.

a great deal of = a large amount of = a lot of

great has the meaning "large" or "extensive" here, not great as in excellent or powerful
