There were witnesses of a figure

Hello!

I have difficulties to understand this sentence:

"There were witnesses of a figure near the scene of the crime, and Ms X, like many other well-known figures, had received threatening letters and phone calls some time before her death."

I understand the sentence but not the expression in pink. I tried to see if it was a real expression but couldn't find anything. The text deals about the murder of a well-known TV presenter.

    In this case, witnesses saw a figure, i.e une silhouette, ou un personnage near the crime scene.
