1. Not all penguins live in such cold places.
2. They are also found next to the ocean in South America.

Does #2. make sense to you? At first glance, it made sense to me, but on second thought, it's really odd.

Thanks.

  • They are also found next to the ocean in on the shores of / on the coast of South America.

Although we may say that one thing is next to another, the ocean is an immense object. It sounds odd to me. In addition to the expressions in green in the above edited sentence, a home may be on the oceanside.

I have a problem with the way the sentence begins. It reads to me as if it should follow a comma, not a full stop.

    Yes it is awkward.

First off, there is no ocean in South America.

Secondly, I doubt there are any penguins dotting the coastline of Venezuela, so I have to assume you mean something more specific, more 'confined,' than "along the shores/coast of South America.

Thanks, cuss, for your prized comment, but are you sure we use a comma here?

Thanks, Cuss, Grand, and Mg, for your golden feedback. Don't worry! I didn't father those lines. I presented them here in that they sounded odd to me. I'm glad I have a little bit of English instinct. Thanks again.

    Cheers,

Thanks, Cuss, for your quick reply. I was trying to hazard a guess: is it more suitable to put a semi-colon here
than a comma? Thanks.[in Not all penguins live in such cold places, they are also found on the coast/shores of South America.]
Yes. Difficult cuss also considered the possibility of a full stop (period) there, and that would work too. A comma is not sufficient.

Edit: on second thought, a colon would be best, I think: the second part explains the first.

Thanks, Kelly, for reassuring my hunch.:)
