This is from “The Gathering” by Anne Enright.
(Chapter 13, page 87)
After grandmother's wake the guests "cleared the kitchen... and were gone".
Does it mean that they ate everything and only left heaps of grease-proof paper behind?

    It could mean exactly that.
    Another rather remote possibility is that they grabbed everything that was left over, wrapped it in grease-proof paper, and took it away with them.
