What does "float away" here mean?

Violet and Sunny sat down beside him, confused and frightened, and put their arms around their brother as though they were afraid he was floating away. They sat there like that, a heap of Baudelaires, until Foreman Flacutono clanged his pots together to signal the end of the break.

It appears to be meant literally, floating off into the air, like a balloon perhaps, so they put their arms around him as a form of restraint. "As though" shows that they weren't really afraid of his floating away, but their actions resembled the actions of people who were afraid of this.
