they're in contention

The last part of the lyrics of The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries intro song goes like this:

The chase goes on with each new mission
With backdrops aplenty, globally,
And through it all, they're in contention,
Sylvester and Tweety... Mysteries!

I was wondering what "in contention" means there.

The cartoon is superficially about solving mysteries (which Granny does with some help from her pets), but the main action occurs when Sylvester (a cat) attempts to capture and eat Tweety (a canary, protected by Hector, a dog).

I don't know if the lyrics are trying to say (1) the pets are all in conflict/disagreement (the cat is trying to eat the canary, while the dog makes sure that doesn't happen), or (2) that they have a good chance to solve the mystery, or something else.

In my first interpretation, "in contention" isn't normally (that I'm aware of) applied to the participants of a disagreement, but rather to the "points of contention" themselves, so I'm not sure about this.

Thanks in advance.
