Could I ask please? One willing writer wrote me: This is a question to make sure that I understood you correctly.

Could I ask if I can use SO instead of THAT in that sentence
or could I rewrite that sentence as follows?
This is a question to make sure for me to understood you correctly.

    That willing writer :) offers you the following suggestions:

    (1) Don't replace "that" with "so" in the sentence. If you do, that sentence won't make any sense.
    (2) Your second sentence doesn't make any sense. You should probably use the original suggestion or wait until another fluent speaker offers you a decent alternative.

    Here is an example of an idiomatic use of "so" with the meaning (roughly) of "for the reason that": May I ask you a question so I can make sure that I understood you correctly?
